Tuning In To The Hum Of The Earth

December 10, 2017 By Julian Kaufmann

Tune In – Turn On

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”  – Tesla

The earth is a cosmic orb in flux.  Consider how we are hurdling through space at a speed of about 67,000 miles per hour.  Yet for most of us, our physical world seems fairly stable.  We are blissfully unaware and in fact, there is much that happens to our world that we can not perceive.

Recently scientists have made breakthroughs about the mysterious “humming” that the earth makes.  Ultra-low-frequency waves are occurring that we can not hear and are a result of the ocean waves and other factors.

As I was reading the Washington Post article on the Earth’s hum,  I became aware of the humming ballast in the overhead fluorescent light at the coffee shop.  This made me think of the hum that you can hear if you are near most utility transformers as the flowing electrical current is stepped-up or down.

From here my brain went to the humming sound you make when you chant.

All these examples, and for life itself, have something in common and can be explained by energy and frequency.

Which brings me to the last point and that is the frequency of our brain waves.

During most of our day, we are on high-alert and operate in a brainwave state characterized by high-frequency brain waves.

Contrast this with the state of peace and calm we feel when we meditate and are generally relaxed. As we meditate we lower our brain’s energy requirements by lowering our brainwave state. The higher the frequency the higher the energy requirements.  Check out my blog post WHAT’S THE FREQUENCY KENNETH for more information.

Thinking About Your Brainwaves

The table below lists the typical brainwave frequencies associated with the various states:

Brain Wave State Frequency (HZ) Notes
Beta 14-30 Awake, normal alert to anxious
Alpha 9-13 Relaxed, calm, lucid, not thinking (Flow)
Theta 4-8 Deep relaxation/ meditation, Mental Imagery
Delta 1-3 Deep, Dreamless Sleep

Don’t Regress During The Retrograde

December 2, 2017 By Julian Kaufmann

Seasons and Seismic Shifts May Occur

In case you don’t know tomorrow is the beginning of the last Mercury Retrograde of the year and with the passing Supermoon, there are all sorts of cosmological situations that may make life difficult to contend with.

Mercury the planet was named after the Roman God of commerce and communication and when the retrograde occurs, human communication can be disrupted.

And to top things off the end of the year hustle and bustle is beginning, so people may get a little testy and not be so cheerful.

No matter. There is an easy way to keep calm and carry on. You don’t have to fight fire with fire.

Simply stop and breathe.

Return to your true home that is always with us – Now!

From this place of calm and peace, it is possible to have compassion for others during this time and always.

We are all doing the best we can.

Practice self-care. Walk and walk-away when you need to.

Take it all in.

Be grateful!

Meander in your mind as you meditate. Who are you and who is having this experience?

Think outside of the box and share your creativity with others or at least in your journal.

Practice box breathing when you feel your agitation stirring.

Love all and serve all.

Peace!

Screaming At The Silent Screen

March 19, 2017 By Julian Kaufmann

Shhh - Silence Helps Heal The Head
Shhh – Silence Helps Heal The Head

Recently I went to the movies for the first time in a long while. When I was younger, I enjoyed going to the picture show and loved being immersed in whatever was being projected on the silver screen.  Today I rarely watch movies and when I do a prefer streaming documentaries in the comfort of my home.

After getting seated and watching 30-minutes of trailers for upcoming movies and enticements to engorge yourself on expensive junk food, I was becoming agitated to “get on with it” and wanting to start the show.

Just as the film began to roll, I was further challenged by the couple in front of us in the theater who were in the midst of their personal drama and continued talking throughout the movie’s introduction.

I found that even after the couple had stopped talking, momentarily,  to watch the film, I was still thinking about them and their talking and thinking to myself how rude it was for them to be talking while I was trying to watch the movie.  I found myself thinking about my next move – should I confront them or “suffer” in silence?  This internal debate went on for some time, growing in layers. Me thinking – “Well why don’t you assert yourself and point out the disruption.”  Me thinking about thinking – “Well he appears to be ex-military and is a possible altercation really worth it”, especially since I didn’t really care about the movie. Me thinking about thinking about thinking – “Remember that time when you challenged the older, stronger Rex when you were younger and got your ass handed to you?” And this went on and on.

My concentration on the movie was broken, and my focus had been diverted by my neighbor’s conversation. Truthfully I was already thinking about multiple other things while the trailers and advertisements went by.  Side note – the theater jacked the volume up on these making it even more uncomfortable to experience.

And now back to the action… or rather reaction.

My reaction to the chatty ones in the cinema is similar to what happens to us, throughout the day, as we confront distractions. Instead of noisy neighbors in a movie house, we have thousands of thoughts per day racing through our mind and we can’t help it. These noisy thoughts often interrupt what we are doing and divert our attention.  Unfortunately often we are not aware of this thought diversion and we follow our meandering musings.  And to think our thinking is one of the great untapped powers available to us and yet we can be derailed by our own devices.

And to think our thinking is one of the great untapped powers available to us and yet we can easily be derailed by our own devices.

We are experiencing life and its many scenes while a narrator comments about what is happening, providing colorful play by play.  We then can become fixated on this internal dialogue (our thoughts) and not be fully present as our focus becomes diverted by external stimuli.

When I realized I was not my thoughts that was a revelation to me. I could separate myself from all the mental chatter instead of being swept up in it.

Our brains exhibit rhythmic patterns of activity and produce waves of electrical energy that can be observed and recorded in an EEG.  In my upcoming book Let Go, Let It Flow I briefly discuss our brain wave states and the relative frequencies associated with each.

Our brains are incredible neural networks that utilize billions of neurons to electrically communicate with each other.  The electrical pulses from the neurons can be measured and we call the measured electrical waves, brain waves.  The measured brain waves have a frequency to them as they are cyclical in nature. There are 4-common brain wave patterns (alpha, beta, theta and delta) each corresponding to a particular frequency at which the brain is operating.

And most of us spend the majority of our conscious state while operating in the Beta range of brain wave state. Unfortunately, this Beta brainwave state corresponds to the highest frequency range.

There is a direct relationship between frequency and energy that shows that the higher the frequency, the higher the energy expenditure required. And most of us spend the majority of our conscious state while operating in the Beta range of brain wave state. Unfortunately, this Beta brainwave state corresponds to the highest frequency range.

However, when we operate in the Theta brainwave state, we lose the sense of ourselves and feel at one with whatever we are doing and with the universe. When our ego diminishes and time itself becomes malleable, we are in a flow state as Stephen Kotler described in his excellent book The Rise of Superman.  This Theta state is also known as the optimal state for inducing flow.

Meditation is a practice of calming your mind that results in lower frequency brainwave states. Buddhist monks have been observed and their brain waves operate in the Theta range and can do so almost at will. When we can operate in the Theta state a sense of oneness develops while the sense of the ego diminishes. We become totally absorbed in whatever we are doing. We are flowing in the zone.

My meditation practice has evolved over the years. At first, I thought the goal of meditation is not to think which is impossible. Now I like to allow whatever I am experiencing and to simply just let that be. Years later I still struggle with bringing my attention to the present moment.  This why we call it practice.

Ultimately I practiced the same concept, noticing and allowing,  at the movie, just allowing the couple to finish their conversation. The movie continued to play and eventually we all, I included, turned our attention to what was flashing before our eyes.

How to stop the Brain Drain

April 4, 2016 By Julian Kaufmann

There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so – William Shakespeare

Did you know that the human brain is about 2% of our total body mass yet it accounts for about 20% of our body’s energy requirements[i]?

That’s right. Pound for pound, our brains are energy hogs that consume much more energy (calories are just another measure of energy) on a relative mass basis than our other organs do.

Of course our brains are the key, super-computer that regulates everything we do and experience, much of which we are not aware of. It makes sense that our cognitive capabilities require more calories than otherwise. Unfortunately this unawareness and the misdirected power of our mind can rob us of energy that we could instead be using to direct towards completing our life’s work.

Recall energy is the ability to do work. When energy is wasted it is no longer available to do work.

In some ways an unattended mind can be like leaving a window open in your home while heating or cooling the home. The result of the open window is that the home’s HVAC system has to work harder to overcome the drain in conditioned air that is flowing out of the home through the open window. If we are not careful and pay attention to our brains and how they are thinking, we are letting precious energy go to waste.

In his book The Power of Now, Eckert Tolle states, “Your mind is an instrument, a tool. It is there to be used for a specific task, and when the task is completed, you lay it down. As it is, I would say about 80 to 90 percent of most people’s thinking is not only repetitive and useless, but because of its dysfunctional and often negative nature, much of it is also harmful. Observe your mind and you will find this to be true. It causes a serious leakage of vital energy[ii]1.”

To solve a problem with an organization, you gotta start at the top.–unknown

Awareness of a problem or situation is the first step in order to correct it.

Becoming aware of the nature and quality of our thoughts is a great step to taking control of your executive office and at the same time allowing you the opportunity to plug any leaks.

Meditation or other mindfulness practices are a good way to go within and simply observe your thoughts. My prior  post 7-Minutes in Heaven provides additional benefits of meditation and a simple 7-minute routine for calming your brain. If you are not already meditating please try it and let me know. If you already have a practice, I would love to hear more about works for you.

Like removing a boiling pan of water from a heat source, when we meditate we allow our brains to calm down and reach a more peaceful state that does not require as much energy to maintain.

Energy and frequency are directly related. That is as the frequency of an object increases so does the energy required to keep the object vibrating at that speed.

When we are worried or anxious our brave waves speed up – the frequency of our brain increases. Conversely when we meditate or rest, our brains operate at much lower frequencies than when we are anxious or worried. This conserves mental energy and allows our minds to reset and return towards a state of equanimity.

Shut out the physical world. Control the mind. Then you will become free. –The Bhagavad Gita

7-Minutes in Heaven – keys to the kingdom

March 21, 2016 By Julian Kaufmann

closet-426388_1280
consciousness closet?

When you were a kid did you ever play the game 7-minutes in Heaven?

If you don’t know about the game it is one in which two people, in my day a boy and a girl, go into a closet and spend 7-minutes “getting to know each other.”

While the two of you were in the closet someone on the outside was a timekeeper and was responsible for letting you know when your time was up with your closet-mate and when it was time for you to leave.

The 7-minutes in the closet usually consisted of some heavy petting, kissing and hugging etc., at least that is the way we played it. Sometimes you might just talk with the other person if there was no chemistry or neither one had a strong enough urge to make the first move.

There was something very liberating about being confined in a dark closet for me back then. I was aware that I could not be seen so I was less self-conscious about how awkward I was actually feeling. Closing the closet door disconnected me from my ego and allowed me to be freer.

Speaking of closing doors and disconnecting from your ego, the Bible says:

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen – Matthew 6:6

Prayer is a sacred time for connecting with God and I find shutting myself off from the outside world often facilitates it. When I pray I close the door to the outside world and find refuge in the stillness.

Unfortunately spending time alone with your thoughts in a quite place can be a scary thing for some of us. As a result many people try to distract themselves constantly to avoid their own closet of silence.

Like prayer, meditation encourages us to disconnect from the outside world and enter a place a peace.

Benefits of meditation [i]include:

  • Reducing Stress
  • Improving concentration
  • Encouraging a healthy lifestyle
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Increasing happiness
  • Increasing acceptance
  • Slowing aging

I confess that meditation is a difficult practice for me but one that has improved the quality of my life. Currently I set a countdown timer for 7-minutes and let go of my thoughts and focus on my breath.

Hence the new adult version of the 7-minutes in heaven game is played whenever and wherever you can close the door to the outside world and instead spend some quality time with you and your thoughts.

Please try it out and let me know what you think. Also try out the METTA mediation technique for more of a group experience –  Metta Mondays

Meanwhile enjoy the silence!
